We have made it through another long winter in Minnesota and Spring is in the air. God created the seasons as visible evidence that time passes – the old has gone, the new has come. Seasons are God’s reminder that he is not stagnant. He blesses us with fresh starts, shows us His abundant creation and calls us to something new. The change of seasons is also God’s call to newness in our sex life.
Winter in Minnesota is filled with blankets of snow and long nights. My husband and I hunker down together under heavy covers, warming each other with the constant hum of our little electric fireplace glowing next to our bed. We spend time playing in the dim light of covers pulled over our heads to create our own private tabernacle. Life slows down and long nights provide extra time for exploring.
But Spring is on its way. I watch my garden burst with color surrounded by lush green. The colors almost seem shocking after the drab end of winter. I feel more playful in bed. Covers become less important while teasing and tickling becomes part of the game. I am eager to dream up some creative encounters to surprise my husband. Sex becomes more physical in the midst of feeling invigorated by the simple tasks of spring clean-up.
The long days of hot summer mean lounging in the shade with cool refreshment. Time is spent playing and splashing and enjoying vacations. In bed, gone are the clothes and the covers. The possibilities are wide open – standing by the bed, up against the wall, in a favorite chair, or out at the bonfire. Vacations challenge us to embrace opportunities and create some memories – even in our sex life. Worry and insecurities seem to fade and everything just seems a little easier. Late nights outside end in comfortable connection followed by sound sleep.
Fall beckons in back to school, and back to routines. Crisp air flirts with stunning leaves as we try to sneak in one more get away. Sheets begin feeling crisp again as we visually feast on each other’s tanned bodies. The pleasure of meat and potatoes sex feels good in the midst of our lives becoming full again. We hang onto each other in the midst of leaving the magic of summer.
Sex changes throughout the year simply because we are impacted by the seasons.
Spring is coming…What are you looking forward to?
Song of Songs 2:11-13
11 See! The winter is past;
the rains are over and gone.
12 Flowers appear on the earth;
the season of singing has come,
the cooing of doves
is heard in our land.
13 The fig tree forms its early fruit;
the blossoming vines spread their fragrance.
Arise, come, my darling;
my beautiful one, come with me.”
